Ultrasonic welding

Ultrasonic welding is a method of joining thermoplastics without glue, screws or tape. Ultrasonic welding is based on the thermoplasticity of the material to be joined, and is suitable for joining both amorphous and semi-crystalline thermoplastics. Ultrasonic welding is a low-energy, inexpensive and additive-free joining method for mass production. The ultrasonic welding process is also easily automated. Ultrasonic welding allows for a short cycle time of the pieces to be joined. Other strengths include efficiency, purity, good repeatability, immediate post-weld processing capability, and high yield percentage. Hermetic joints can also be made. In ultrasonic welding, melting of the material occurs only in the area to be welded, thus avoiding problems caused by thermal loading in other areas.

Ultrasound can also be used to cut, mould and pierce thermoplastic materials.
In ultrasonic cutting, for example, the woven thermoplastic material melts the cut next to the area, preventing the material from unravelling after the cut.

How does ultrasonic welding work?

Low-frequency electrical energy is converted by means of a generator and a piezoelectric ceramic converter (converter) into high-frequency mechanical energy. The vibration energy is transmitted by boosters that amplify the vibration, as well as to the upper body to be welded by the sonotrode, through which the vibration energy is conveyed to the joining surface between the parts. The area under the greatest compression is first to melt. The melting is controlled by various welding parameters. At the junction surface, the vibrational energy causes the surfaces to be joined to heat up due to the movement of molecules caused by cyclic tension, as well as friction between the joining surfaces.
